I never updated on my final period of my 1st year--which has been long over, as i am now in my second year almost at the end of the 1st period. Oh well. Vakstudie (Core Study), Period 3

We did several things in this class. Went on excursions to museums, had assignments based on it, did some personal artwork about the relationship between our work and life, etc.

We were to choose one of the assignments that we had done, and further it.

My personal choice came from our trip to Museum De Pont in Tilburg, NL. We were to choose a work there that dealt with history, or had a central theme. Then we were to make a reaction to it. I made a reaction, and then furthered it. I received a 7 for this class.

I reacted this way because: In the work above, the people depicted are all people in our history or present day who have uncovered hidden truths, or brought attention the things that need to be addressed. My reaction, an upside down garbage can with trash on it, is to show that we have this trash, which everyone tries to hide or burry, but hiding it will not make it go away. It's there, and so...we need to find a way to deal with it....

Serieel Beeld (Image Series), period 3

In this class our assignment was to listen to conversations of people and record/write them down. Then make a series of 3 short films about our ‘convo observations’.

I enjoy making films, so I had a good time working on this assignment. I was well organized with it, and that always helps…especially when there is so much needed in making a film and getting the right shots, sounds, inspiration, ideas, etc.

I received an 8 in this class. Yay!

3D, Period 3

A lot was done in this class. We started with a 'family theory'. Making photos of our family (or a family of objects--for instance: all pillows), and arranging them in different ways and such. I never see my family and we're a bit 'seperated', so i used objects. I had 3 different families, but i went with my family of containers: (photos coming soon i guess)

I started out very strong in this class, then when it came time to make collages and whatnot, i got stuck after i decided on which collage/work to 'further my process with'.

But after speaking with Herman (the teacher--who i was certain could help me, because he always sees things that maybe you wouldn't see), i figured it all out and started making a lot of quality work in a short amount of time. I was enjoying it very much. I always enjoy 3D once my mind gets to going at it. The pity is: i started a bit too late with my work, and for this reason, my grade suffered. But i got a 7 (that a B for Americans), which is always appreciated.
The concept/idea behind my work is: Deciding (or being confused over) which path to take: The path of safety, or the daring one?

2D, Period 3

Assignment 1: Make photos of myself in the morning, midday, evening and night. Conceptually and realistically. I'll just upload a general photo of all the photos together, rather than uploading them all seperately:

Next parts of assignment 1: each day in class we would use a different technique in drawing/painting. Some days we painted models, some days we painted the colours that were in our photos, some days we drew students, etc. Also, each day we were to make a self portrait.
The 'final product' was to use those techniques to further your study process of yourself. I took what we had done in each class period and emplemented it in my new 'self' process. Maybe i should have just picked one technique or idea and went with that, because the teacher got the idea that i couldn't follow a process. Other teachers say that i am very strong with my process and am able to further my work dilegently. But yea...this period was the hardest for me because of several personal reasons. This class specifically was very unlcear for myself and everyone at several points, and i just did what i thought would be the best idea.

During the period we were to make photos of our surroundings, taking note the interesting scenes there were in daily, ordinary life and scenarios. Things that you and other tend to ignore or be blind to. He said i did this well:

3D, Period 2

I think out of all the classes this period, i probably enjoyed this one the most...or maybe it's a close tie to Beeld en Concept, i dunno. But anyway...to the point...

The assignment started out with looking through art books and researching artists and their 3D work, to determine pieces that we liked and pieces we didn't like. We were to come to an understanding of why we liked or disliked the art, and what similarities could be seen in all of them. Later we made work (through collages and other methods) that came from inspiration of the works that we liked from other artists. Throughout time, our work would evolve and evolve. I started noticing and learning a lot about myself, and what naturally often comes forth from me in my art.

So eventually through our work, we came to a theme. That theme would be the basis of an extensive study. My theme was 'hide and seek', to put it simply. Meaning, my work often had a subtle movement, but also there would be this world wherein another world would come through, but only show itself in the tiniest bit. Things would have unknown orgins and my work kept the viewer always curious. What do i look at? This or that? Which side, which angle, is there something there...etc...

I received an 8 for this assignment. I'm glad for that. I worked very hard and learned a lot.

The teacher said i gave a good presentation and had a lot of interesting things to see. He said, however, that i needed to work on verbal communication between myself and him. He felt that he was unsure of how to take me sometimes, or that maybe i was kind of 'aggressive' at times. I didn't understand this statement, but it's all in the communication i suppose. I didn't feel any particular feelings about strange communication one way or the other. I think in the beginning i was just going through some rough times personally, and that probably came out in my daily life in the classroom, and with how i handled situations with the teacher. He is very extroverted, and i'm rather sensitive to sound and actions around me. But i explained that to him--that he made me a bit nervous. I eventually got used to his personality and it wasn't a factor anymore.

Since my work became so extensive, i have hundreds of photos. For this reason, i've decided to make a 'Sharli School Photobucket' album, wherein i can make folders of each class, and when i have so many photos to share, i can upload them to the album and give you viewers the link, rather than uploading so many photos here on my blog. But i will go ahead and post a few here on the blog itself...of my beordeling (grading day) and whatnot:

Beeld en Concept (Image and Concept), Period 2

OK...i did really well in this class. I enjoyed it too. Here's what i did...
So the assignment went in steps. Firstly, we listened to a series of sounds and music and sat around drawing whatever came out quickly from the inspiration the sounds gave us.
Secondly, each student had to choose about 3 of those tracks and make (or find) 10 images each per track. Then, we would choose ONE of those, and continue the imaging/inspiration process, only this time we were to write a story, poem, or some kind of text that would come from our minds as we listened to the track. We shouldn't be too literal, however (like if it sounds like ducks quacking, don't write about ducks quacking).

This website doesn't support me adding sound files, so unfortunately you can't listen to the file unless/until i make it a video with just sound in it (which i will get around to). BUT, i can write out the text that i made to it:

For this assignment I recieved an 8!
She was very pleased throughout the period with what i had done. She said it was good to see that i could mix humor with darkness. My film is a bit heavy and dark, but several of my before-filming images are humorous and playful. She said i got my point and theme across well, which was 'Trying to Get Out'. She liked that i dared to try things out and that i was bold in working. I feel that i am confident in this class and confident in my ideas and the work i do.
Her downpoints to my final product was that in the beginning of the film, it takes a lot of patience. You don't know what to expect, and she would have liked some clue to that.
I did mean for the video to be long and draggy in the beginning, and heavier and more chaotic towards the end. But sometimes that isn't always pleasant for the viewer.

2D, Period 2

For 2D this period we were to choose a place that is accessible to us, and in the first steps, make photos of this place...Morning, mid-day, afternoon and night photos.
The space you've chosen could be outside or inside, for instance in the forest or in your bedroom.
Throughout our process, we were to communicate with the viewer on different ways of showing our space through any method that can be thought of (collage, painting techniques, drawing, different materials, etc...). In the end, a series of 4 images were to be made, linking to each other, each one representing morning, midday, evening or night. This final 'product' was not as important of course, as the porcess itself is. And throught the process you would find that more than one series would come forth.

For this class i received a 7 (that's a B for Americans who read this). The teacher felt that i did a good job in trying different things...much variation. She said it was good that i tried many things, rather than sitting on the same idea. But also in my work you can see a clear process from one point to another. The steps i had taken were also a plus, she said. I'm actually not sure of what criticism she had for me, because she didn't really mention what i needed to work on.

Serieel Beeld (Image Series), Period 2

For the second period in Serieel Beeld, each person in the class was to choose a packet of things out of a whole slew of packets. Inside those packets were old postcards (addressed to people, with stamps and whatnot), and other miscelaneous paper items. Such as photos or tickets or letters.
My 'baggy' included a Postcard and some old museum tickets. The contents of the bags had no specific relation to each other...so our assignment was to give them a relation. Come up with ideas, get them on paper and film. Make a story, using imaging based on the contents of our bag. Make film sketches and real sketches. The end product would be a film.

The voices are all from me. While reading the letter, my voice was edited slightly using "Cooledit", a sound editing program. The drawings were made with ink and water. The whole film was put together and edited in Adobe Premier Pro, and some scenes (like in the beginning) were also edited using Flash and Photoshop. The door opening is made with Flash.

The teacher was pleasantly surprised with my work, however she would have liked to have seen more scenes like the first one (with the flash editing). Also she felt that i could have done more with my group. But i found it very difficult to do that during the class because my group was never around, and i had to stay where there was an electricy outlet because of my laptop and cameras. But overall, she felt that i did well, especially given my circumstances (i was very sick 3 times during her class, therefore missing it), but i made sure to talk to other students about the work, and to email the teacher when i could if i had questions. So i didn't get behind in class.
I recieved a 7- for this class.

Serieel Beeld (Image Series), Period 1

Assignment: In this class we first began by going into groups of 4 or 5. After this, we were instructed to go outside, into town, down the street (wherever you wanted to go), and walk for 12 minutes. During this 12 minute walk, we would write down and record anything that struck us. The smells, sounds, sights, weather, etc... We could make sketches, videos, recordings, writings, and we could pick up objects and bring them back if necassary.
Out of all of the fotos each person made, we were to choose 30 each. From the 30, we would narrow it down to 6. Six images that can tell a story.
With this, we were free to tell a story any way possible, as long as there was a series of imaging.

2D Class, Period 1

Assignment: Throughout this class we had been given several different assignments. In the beginning we did some still life drawings, then on to nude model sketches, light and darkness research, further researching from within our nude model drawings, and onward to a subject/standpoint in which to make a 'book' (more like a compilation) of images based on a theme.
My theme ended up being 'What's Inside' or the contradiction of inside and outside.
I think i learned the most from this class. It was a long process, but i am very happy with the conclusion. The teacher was debating whether to give me a 7 or an 8 as a grade. I ended up recieving a 7.
I have not yet photographed my book, and some photographs that should be here are still yet to be emailed to me, as i used someone else's camera at some point. Hopefully all of those images will be uploaded soon. In the mean time, i can upload what i do have. Some earlier work:

The nude model paintings. We were only allowed to paint the dark areas on her body, and we had a time frame of 3 minutes to do so, usually. A difficult, but effective technique:

Very early sketches and ideas taken from a couple of nude model drawings. I first chose the lighter drawing as inspiration, and then once i realized that that drawing wasn't very inspiring, i changed my mind and went with the darker one. More possibilities came from it.

Some more of the process. When i have homework i always hang up what i have done so far, so that i can reflect on what i have done and what should come next.

At this moment, this is all the images i have, but there are soo many more to come.

3D Class, Period 1

Assignment: We were put into groups of 2 (my partner quit school the next week, so i was alone), and each person was to choose at least 3 building materials. The materials had to be everyday objects (like pencils, eggs, cups, bowls, spoons, forks, etc..), and they had to be things that were easily obtainable in mass amounts. So choosing a bottle of expensive perfume wouldn't be very handy, as you would have to buy many, many bottles ;) .
My objects were:
-Garbage Bags
-Screws
-Tea-light Candles
-Tape (clear)

Throughout the weeks you were to first explore your possibilities with the objects as building tools. Then as inspiration.
Finally, you were to choose the one you found most appealing, and create a final product of a size at least 1 meter cubed.
I ended up choosing the garbage bags because i felt that they gave the strongest impact visually and spacially.
My work ethic was strong, and the teacher said that i am a driven student who likes to work. My grade for this assignment was a 7.

Beeld en Concept (Image and Concept), Period 1

Assignment: Where do I begin...let's see. Well in the beginning of the year, we were to choose from 2 standpoints, one beging 'Keukentaffel' (kitchen table) and one being 'Wereld' (world).
That may sound confusing, but it's more obvious than you think. If you chose Keukentaffel, then you have chosen to pick a topic that is close to you and you personally. For instance, if you have a strong love for your pets. And if you chose Wereld, then you would come up with a subject that is important to you, but that affects the rest of the world as well. Abortion, for an example. Aside from this, we were also instructed to find 2 artists (from the 1970's and up), who have, in your personal opinion, illustrated theselves in manners that you either like or dislike, using the keaukentaffel theory or the wereld.
Eventually, your subject would both coincide with the world and the kitchen table point of views.
I chose for Keukentaffel, and my subject was the Internet. My artists were Harold Szeeman and Jopie Huisman.
I ended up making a film, and I think the film gives you a pretty good enough exlpaination of why i chose the internet. In the film you can see some of the artwork/sketches i made during the process of the assignment, which i decided to use in the film.

For you American friends reading this, you may not know the grading system here. We are graded on a scale of 1-10. Ten being the best...an A+.
My grade for this assignment was a 7. I expected an 8, in all honesty. I worked very hard and I had an extensive process, but a 7 is by no means a bad grade, and I'm fine enough with it.
The teacher's advice to me was to believe in myself, and you use more of my ideas, throughout the process, in my final product. Maybe i used too much new material in the film that he hadn't seen before? That's my guess. I often tend to let ideas lay, rather than furthering them. So i think he would have liked me to further some of the ideas that i had during the prior weeks of working.

Introduction Week at school

For the intruduction week we were put into groups of 4, wherein we had to discuss a bit about ourselves via 'speed dating' (maybe like what kind of art we do, or about things we find important), and through that we had to choose an argument (like white vs. black for example) that came from our interests and make art about it, pertaining to the city we were in (Den Bosch). Oh, and we had to go into town and make photos for the assignment. Anyway, it turned out that the two females, one being myself, were more traditional 'classic' artists, and the two males were of newer 'modern' talents. So our argument was 'Classic vs. Modern'. A lot of ideas came to mind, and we finally decided on photo's of doors, because in Holland it often seems that the door is what makes the statement of whatever building there is, be it a house or a business. People like their doors. So we have a series of them, the first series being classic style, and the second series being modern. They actually go from most classic to most modern in sequence. We also thought the doors were a good idea because they are entrances, and this introduction week was our entrance into St. Joost. Ha.
The advice from the teacher was fine i suppose, though he said it was a bit too obvious and that it's nice when you can leave room for questioning. I agree. I wasn't completely satisfied with the outcome. I felt that our group spent too much time photoshopping pictures that no one would notice so much anyway. But it's alright. Afterall, it was the introduction week, and life is not over :] There will be many chances to learn and grow, and make better art for that matter!
